How To Listen to Jazz
January 13, 2007

Saxophonist and Truman State Professor Tim AuBuchon will explain "How to Listen to Jazz" this Thursday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Magruder Hall 1000 on the Truman Campus.

Novice jazz listeners are often mystified by jazz performance. Where is the melody? Who should the audience listen to? How do the musicians know when to start and stop? Why are there so many solos?

Professor Tim AuBuchon will shed light on these and other questions from the perspective of both an audience member and a performer.

The presentation will be made up of lecture, performance, and the study of selected recordings. Listening strategies for the audience will be illustrated through improvisations on standard jazz compositions. Listening exercises will include the playing of several different recordings of the same composition by different artists from different time periods.

Last Day to Buy CDs at The 'Ville!
December 14, 2006

After 6:00 this (Friday) afternoon The 'Ville won't be selling CDs anymore. There's a huge selection of recent titles at excellent prices.

The 'Ville will be open after Friday but the owner is moving and wants to sell as much clothing as possible.

So if you need any CDs for gifts, etc., now is the time to stop by. And let anyone who might dig the selection know.

We're working on finding a new home for them in the spring! Thanks for your support.

p.s. The 'Ville (117 W. Washington, 660-665-7727) is on the south side of Kirksville's Square, a few doors down from Washington St. Java Co.

Dressy Bessy Confirmed!
December 10, 2006

The incredible Dressy Bessy will be playing the DuKum Friday, January 12 with HappyAss!

These guys are part of the famed Elephant 6 Collective (Of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, many more), their CDs are amazing, and their shows are a blast.

As Filter Magazine says, Dressy Bessy is worth seeing because they "make . . . you dance instead of forcing you to try to like something for the sake of cool." Amen.

Souled American, who graced the DuKum stage in May 2007, is featured in this month's issue of The Believer.

The author, Theodore McDermott, makes his worship of the band clear when he proclaims, "when I listen to music, I listen to Souled American."

A must-read!
