She Swings She Sways returns!

She Swings, She Sways coalesced in the only apartment building in downtown Ottumwa, Southeast Iowa’s post-industrial wasteland, when an acoustic duo (John Gordon & Cory Canny) met a long-time drums and bullfiddle rhythm section (Jason Bolinger & Troy Morgan). Drawing on over 30 years of combined experience, the band has been writing, recording, and performing for a little over two years.

She Swings, She Sways released a self-titled EP in the winter of ’05, which has been quickly snatched up by audiences across the Midwest. They are currently finalizing post-production on their first full-length record, Wasted Love Songs, at Appleseed Studios in Ottumwa, recording a new EP titled Six Sad Songs (which will include a song contributed by each member), and writing material for their next project.

For the last two years, She Swings, She Sways has played over 150 shows within a 250 mile radius of their home town. They have completed four tours of the Midwest, the last of which in the winter of ’07 saw the addition of two new players – Wes VanAntwerp (electric guitar) and Diana Garles (keys, vocals, trumpet). Their recent travels have resulted in many new friends and fans, a few broken hearts, and the rescue of Sassafras, a horse stuck in a frozen Kansas pond. They will hit the road through the Midwest again in the spring of ’08 and will be embarking on longer journeys beginning in the summer.

She Swings, She Sways’ range of influences is wide, combining rocking two-beat stomp, soulful lovelorn lyrics, and lilting pop melodies. They’re always able to find a girl’s bed to sleep in (though she may not be in it), and her mom usually makes them muffins in the morning. They all hope to soon leave their homes for the long haul and take their music anywhere they can find a meal, a bed, and some open ears.

local act, Wilbur Day and the Acey Deucey Club will be opening the evening.

admission: $3.00

if the weather is nice, this show will quite possibly held out on our porch!

Lately it seems those uber-hip indie music czars at Pitchfork can't help touting bands just as Kirksvillain is bringing them to town.

This time it's a stellar write-up of Bergen, Norway's Sissy Wish, who play The DuKum Upp this Saturday, March 22 (with Come to Japan).

The upshot: "She wants to dance, damnit, and she wants you dancing with her."

Advance Tickets available at Washington St. Java Co. and Vintage Grooves (the vinyl and CD shop across from the Kirksville Post Office).

Wisely, who's played a couple of great gigs here at the DuKum, is gunning for a spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

If you'd like to help, send him an e-mail with the subject line "Why Kimmel Should Book Wisely" and a message that starts something like "You should book Wisely on your show because . . ."

Send the e-mails with your name and town to wwisely [at] mac.com by midnight Tuesday (tomorrow).

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Pine Hill Haints got a great Pitchfork review for their new CD Ghost Dance and they're playing the DuKum Friday, February 29.

This'll be a hootenanny.
